By using Sunpatch, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
Sunpatch is a free, lightweight, browser-based tool for planning by the sun. The outdoor planner estimates sunlight exposure across a yard layout from astronomical sun-position calculations and the obstacles you draw. The indoor planner estimates how much light houseplants would receive at different spots in a room, based on its windows, layout, and your location. Both are provided for personal planning and informational purposes only.
Sun exposure estimates are mathematical approximations. They do not account for:
Estimates may differ materially from actual conditions in your yard. Always verify by direct observation before making significant planting or landscaping decisions.
The indoor planner's light estimates (daily light integral, or DLI) are likewise modeled approximations. They rely on assumptions about glass transmittance, window treatments, surface reflectance, and a clear-sky light model, and do not account for real-world weather, dirty or curtained windows, neighboring buildings beyond those you add, or the many other factors that affect indoor light. Treat them as relative guidance, a brighter spot versus a darker one, rather than precise measurements. For an exact reading, use a dedicated light meter.
Plant suggestions and growing notes are provided as general guidance only. They are not professional horticultural, agricultural, or landscaping advice. Suitability depends on your specific soil, microclimate, local pests, irrigation, indoor humidity, and many other factors not modeled here. Consult a local nursery, horticulturist, or your regional cooperative extension service for advice specific to your situation.
Some plants are labeled "pet-safe" or "child-safe" as general guidance only. These labels are not a guarantee of safety and must not be relied upon to decide whether a plant is safe to keep around children or animals. Plant toxicity is complex: it can vary by species, cultivar, plant part, ripeness, quantity ingested, and the individual person or animal, and our database may contain errors or omissions. A plant marked safe may still cause a reaction, and a plant not marked safe is not necessarily dangerous.
Before bringing any plant into a home with children or pets, verify its safety with an authoritative source: your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, or Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US). If you suspect a person or animal has eaten a toxic plant, contact a medical or veterinary professional immediately.
Sunpatch is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We make no representations about the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of the information provided.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Sunpatch or reliance on its estimates, including but not limited to losses related to planting decisions, landscaping costs, or crop failure.
The cloud save feature lets you store your yard or room layout on Cloudflare's infrastructure and share it via a link. A few limitations to be aware of:
Sunpatch uses Stadia Maps for map tiles, OpenStreetMap services for geocoding and map-based building suggestions, Komoot's Photon geocoder for address search autocomplete, phzmapi.org for USDA hardiness zone data, and Cloudflare Pages and KV for hosting and optional cloud saves. These services are provided by third parties under their own terms. We are not responsible for their availability or accuracy.
We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of Sunpatch after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
